“Well, what do you think?” Vicky asked as we got back in the truck a few minutes later, Jo and Snowy on their way, resuming their walk through their neighborhood. “Do you think we learned anything useful?”

“I’d say so,” I said. “The fact that Marjorie was happy that her brother left town is quite telling. It makes me wonder if her brother feels the same, choosing to leave everything of his to her in his will if something were to happen to him.”

“I wondered about that, too,” Vicky said. “Talking to Marjorie will make things even clearer, I think.”

We got back to our house, and Vicky stuck around so we could further discuss our conversation. The moment we walked into the house, though, I heard the phone ringing.

Heart skipping, I dashed over to it, picking it up. “Hello?”

“Oh, good, I caught you!” It was Roger. “How are you?”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “You don’t sound panicked, so that’s a good thing.”

“Not panicked at all,” Roger answered. “Just wanted to catch you up to speed. Your brother is down in Reddington again. Left about two hours ago. He’s with the forensics team. I just talked to him.”

“That’s good,” I said. “He said he wanted to do that when he and I talked before he left this morning. Has he learned anything yet? Or is it too soon?”

“Too soon,” Roger said. “But while he’s been doing that, I decided to do a little more digging on this house of Mr. Wilson’s. Well, first I decided to look at our list of missing persons from the last ten years, and thankfully, there aren’t any that are still unaccounted for. That does mean that whoever it was that we managed to dig up, they were not on that list. They had been killed or died but were never reported as missing or dead.”

“Which means that it’s even more likely that this was a covered up murder,” I said.

Vicky’s eyes flashed, and she stiffened beside me. She might not have been able to hear Roger, but my words would definitely be enough cause for concern.

“That’s what I’m afraid of, as well,” Roger said. “However, while I was down in the archives, I decided to page through some old newspapers. Finding that one at the house got me thinking about others that might have been published at the time, or maybe sometime around then. It took me a good while, but I did manage to find an article about the house supposedly being haunted.”

I pursed my lips together. “I’m not sure if I should feel relieved or annoyed at that,” I said. “What did the article say?”

“It was published just a few weeks after Mortimer Wilson left town,” Roger said. “At least, it was a few weeks after the date we kept finding in the house. Supposedly, there had been some odd sightings on the property, especially at night.”

“Like what?”

“Strange lights in the windows of the house, shapes in the shadows, that sort of thing,” Roger said.
